NOTIFICATION OF A RECENT SEISMIC EVENT, 01 March 2019

The Council for Geoscience (CGS) can confirm that an earthquake occurred in the West of Johannesburg on Friday, 1 March 2019, at 06:56 am South African Standard Time. The earthquake registered a preliminary 3.8 on the local magnitude scale as recorded by the South African Seismograph Network. Although the tremors could be felt around the greater Johannesburg area, this seismic disturbance has been located by our seismic stations to have occurred near the Harmony Doornkop mining area in the West Rand.

The CGS is the custodian of the South African National Seismograph Network, which monitors seismic wave activities throughout the country. More details will be shared in due course to confirm the basis of the seismic event upon iterative review of the preliminary data by our Seismologists.
