WHO WE ARE THE COUNCIL FOR GEOSCIENCE IS ONE OF THE NATIONAL SCIENCE COUNCILS OF SOUTH AFRICA
The Council for Geoscience is one of the national science councils of South Africa and is the legal successor of the Geological Survey of South Africa, which was formed in 1912 by the amalgamation of three former surveys, the oldest of which — the Geological Commission of the Cape of Good Hope — was founded in 1895.
The Geoscience Act (no. 100 of 1993) established the organisation in its present form. Today, the Council for Geoscience is a modern institution that boasts excellent facilities and expertise, ranking among the best in Africa.
OUR MISSION The mission of the CGS is to contribute to a prosperous South Africa by:
Providing integrated, systematic and thematic maps and conducting research on the onshore and offshore geology of South Africa, as mandated. We facilitate mineral, energy and agricultural development; we contribute to the assessment and sustainable management of mineral, geohydrological and geo environmental resources; we support infrastructure development.
Acting as a national advisory authority on geo-environmental pollution.
Providing an information repository and delivery platform that facilitates actionable decisions and making relevant information accessible to relevant stakeholders.
Discharging our mandate in a manner that supports transformation and the national developmental imperatives.
