THE COUNCIL FOR GEOSCIENCE MOURNS THE PASSING OF DR LUC CHEVALLIER

The CGS mourns the passing of Dr Luc Chevallier. Dr Chevallier served as a Specialist Scientist and Manager within the on- and offshore theme. He obtained his PhD from the University of Grenoble in 1980 and his DSc in 1987 from Grenoble and Stellenbosch. His pioneering research provided an early geological and tectonic understanding of Réunion and the surrounding Indian Ocean islands. Dr Chevallier began his nearly 30-year career at the CGS in 1991, contributing to numerous local and international programmes during his tenure. These included the CGS’s African mapping programme across much of West and North Africa, as well as critical groundwater and shale gas research in South Africa. Following his retirement in 2019, Dr Chevallier continued to serve the organisation as a key specialist reviewer for its CCUS research. Dr Chevallier leaves behind a remarkable legacy of scientific publications, achievements, and, most importantly, the development and mentorship of many young scientists.
